A recent trademark application from Volkswagen in the US could give away one future product potentially in the works.

CarBuzz has uncovered a Volkswagen trademark application, filed November 25th, 2019 with the US Patent and Trademark Office, for the name "Basecamp" as applied to "[a]utomobile packages of premium features including structural and non-structural parts."

If "Basecamp" means anything to you in the context of Volkswagen, it's because of the Volkswagen Atlas Basecamp concept unveiled at the New York International Auto Show last April. Based on the 2019 Volkswagen Atlas SEL Premium, the Basecamp concept was designed to be the perfect vehicular companion for the avid mountain biker.

The Atlas Basecamp concept features Volkswagen's stalwart 276 horsepower 3.6-liter VR6 engine and 4Motion all-wheel-drive. Beyond that, how much resemblance the concept might bear to a production version is unknown. The concept rides on 17-inch Traverse MX Concept wheels from fifteen52, wrapped in 265-section all-terrain tires, and maintained a ride height 1.5 inches higher than normal thanks to a set of aftermarket H&R coil springs.

Matte Platinum Gray and Black Uni paint adorn the exterior, punctuated by bright orange accents and topped off with a rugged Air Design body kit. The Atlas Basecamp concept is further adorned with a low-profile FrontRunner Slimline II expandable roof rack system, and a 40-inch front and 10-inch rear LED light bar.

There's no word on when the Volkswagen Atlas Basecamp might join the lineup, assuming it is indeed slated for production.

Volkswagen's utility vehicles don't enjoy quite the same rugged, ready-for-adventure image in North America as some rival automakers do. The Volkswagen Touareg arguably fit that image, but it's been discontinued in the market due to lackluster sales performance and a high price tag. As such, launching a sub-brand around the adventurous "Basecamp" concept might suit the German automaker as it goes head-to-head in utility vehicle segments against the likes of Ford, Subaru, and Jeep.
