Can I park at Montserrat?

There is parking for cars (including disabled drivers), motorbikes and coaches at Montserrat Monastery. There are two different car park options - see below for more details.

Car Park at Cremallera de Monistrol Vila rack railway station

Many visitors to Montserrat Monastery decide that they would like to take the rack railway up the mountain to Montserrat, even if this is not a necessity. This is for two reasons. Firstly, the Cremallera de Monistrol Vila rack railway station offers views from below of the whole of Montserrat Monastery with attractive photo opportunities. Secondly, the rack railway journey, winding its way up Montserrat mountain, can be seen as part of the adventure of a trip to Montserrat.

Parking at the Cremallera de Monistrol Vila rack railway station is free - however, you will need to pay for the rack railway journey up to Montserrat Monastery (see our Montserrat Rack Railway page for full price details).

Operating hours for car park.

The Cremallera de Monistrol Vila car park has the same opening hours as the rack railway itself. This means that once the rack railway has stopped running the car park will close for the night. This means that if you decide to park in this car park, it is very important that you do not miss the last rack railway service from Montserrat Monastery to Monistrol de Vila station.

Our Insider Tip

When you are coming back from Montserrat Monastery on the rack railway it is easy to get confused about what stop you should get off at to return to your car in the car park. There are three stops on the rack railway route - Montserrat, Monistrol Vila and Monistrol de Montserrat. When you are coming back down the mountain from Montserrat you will reach Monistrol Vila first. It is this stop that you need to get off at for the car park. Do not stay on the rack railway and continue to Monistrol de Montserrat.

Where is the rack railway station car park?

The Cremallera de Monistrol Vila car park is located at the Cremallera de Monistrol Vila Rack Railway station. The station sits off the C-55 (motorway).

You can take motorways A-2 or AP-7, come off at Martorell and take the C-55 at junction 582A.

Alternatively, you can take the C-5s motorway, turn off at Castellbell I al Vilar.

Capacity of car park

At the Cremallera de Monistrol Vila rack railway station there is the capacity for:

  • 1000 cars
  • 70 coaches
  • There is a total of 18 disabled parking spaces (6 on each floor of the car park)

If the car park becomes full, the staff at Monistrol de Vila parking will direct you to use the coach parking spaces.

Car Park Tarrifs at the station.

Parking at the Cremallera de Monistrol Vila rack railway station is free.

There is also a car park located right next to Montserrat Monastery. Check our Map of Montserrat page for an understanding of where the car park sits in relation to the Monastery.

This car park is useful as it brings you right up to the Monastery. However, you will find that the car park sits down the side of a hill. If you are disabled or elderly you may find the walk up the hill towards the Monastery a slight struggle (the Monistrol Vila car park above allows you to take the rack railway straight into the very heart of Montserrat).

You will have to pay for this parking (see below). However, if you have come with a car full of people this will cost you less than having to pay for each individual to take the rack railway from Monistrol de Vila.

The parking that is at Montserrat Monastery is open 24 hours, meaning that you do not need to worry about being stranded in Montserrat when the last public transport options stop running for the day.

Operating hours for Montserrat Monastery car park

The car parking is outdoors and is open 24 hours. However, prices will vary depending on how long you stay for (see below).

    Where is the car park?

    Our Insider Tip

As parking spaces at Montserrat Monastery are limited, you may get to the top and find that there are no spaces available. If this happens to you, it is worth driving to the car park at Monistrol Vila (above). They have a far greater parking capacity so it is much more likely that you will be able to leave your car there.

    Car Park Tariffs

Prices vary depending on whether you are parking a motorbike, car or coach. See table below for the times:

    Rate Bike Car Coach
Per day Up to 30 minutes: Free More than 30 minutes: €3.50 Up to 30 Minutes: Free More than 30 Minutes: €7.00 Up to 30 minutes: €40.00 More than 30 minutes: €80.00
